UrbanWorks is pleased to welcome Kari Berg and Dominick Hart to our team. Kari joins our ranks with over 30 years of experience in architecture, interior design, and construction project management, and will be serving as a Senior Project Manager / Construction Manager. Dominick comes to UrbanWorks with over 25 years of experience in architectural design, and will serve as a Senior Project Architect. Both of them have experience in a wide range of projects and will be valuable additions to to our staff. Welcome, Kari and Dom!

UrbanWorks Participates in the 2018 Canstruction Design Competition

UrbanWorks teamed up with Tandem Inc. and BASE Engineering for the 2018 Canstruction Chicago design competition. The competition is a “design/build event which benefits the Greater Chicago Food Depository,” featuring “colossal structures made entirely out of cans of food.” The structures are then judged by a celebrity chef, members of the AEC industry as well as the public. UrbanWorks’ entry, DNA_Societies, consisted of 3,843 cans of food, and spoke to how the food we eat (and our access to healthy food) modifies human DNA over time. Go team!

Erick Roldan Participates in “Rebuilding Together”

This spring, UrbanWorks’ Project Architect Erick Roldan participated in the Rebuilding Together Community Revitalization program through the Arquitectos organization. With the help of donations, fundraising, skilled and non-skilled volunteers, Rebuilding Together helps disadvantaged home owners make the necessary repairs and upgrades to their homes and improve their living environment. Erick was a Co-captain for a home located in Bellwood, IL and UrbanWorks’ Ameera Ashraf-O’Neil and EJ Fernandez were team members.

Patricia Saldaña Natke Participates in “Lost Chicago” Panel

On May 24th, UrbanWorks’ Principal, Patricia Saldaña Natke, participated in a panel discussion hosted by the Art Institute of Chicago, titled “‘Lost Chicago’: The Past, Present and Future of Historic Preservation.” The panel, which also included author and historian David Garrard Lowe, author and former AIC curator John Zukowsky, and SAIC professor Terry Tatum, focused on the genesis of Historic Preservation in Chicago and what its future may hold. Lowe also discussed his book “Lost Chicago”, and the library exhibit “Memior of a City” (April 10-June 15, 2018), which includes photos from his personal collection. Read more

EJ Fernandez Joins UrbanWorks

UrbanWorks is pleased to welcome EJ Fernandez to our team as Project Coordinator / Designer. EJ comes to UrbanWorks with over six years of professional design and project management experience, with a portfolio ranging from residential to commercial, institutional and higher-education. He is passionate about holistic design, the cultural aspects of architecture and its social impact. Prior to joining UrbanWorks, he served as an Architectural Designer/Job Captain + Project Manager at an architecture firm in Culver City, CA. UrbanWorks Welcomes Summer Interns

CPS CTE Intern Elynn Jensen, One Summer Chicago/Vamos Intern Oscar Hernandez, College Intern Corinth Jackson and High School Interns Alexis Roldan and Gabriella Finch were introduced to the field of architecture. The UrbanWorks Summer Interns attended meetings, visited projects under construction, and assisted with project drawings and material selections. UrbanWorks participated as Mentor Sponsors for Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s One Summer Chicago program, which “brings together government institutions, community-based organizations and companies to offer over employment and internship opportunities to youth and young adults ages 14 to 24” and Host Firm for the Chicago Public Schools Career and Technical Education (CTE) College Prep Program which gives “ hands-on training and real world experience through internships”.
