El Zocalo Apartments

This six-story mixed-use building provides a strong new presence for the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council on Chicago’s busy 47th Street. The program includes community-focused commercial space on the ground level with 30 apartments above in one-, two-, and three-bedroom configurations to fit a variety of family sizes. Alternating opaque and transparent surfaces, punctuated with expressed and recessed balconies, give the exterior a rhythmic movement that reflects the dynamic opportunity of its location. Patterned color across the facades adds to the expressive range of the building. An outdoor green area, indoor gathering space, kitchen, and children’s play area are among the shared amenities that foster a sense of community among the building’s residents.
