The ecology and aesthetics of the Copper Canyon region of Chihuahua, Mexico inspired the formal expression of this renovation and addition to a high school in a predominantly Latino neighborhood. Dance and movement are evoked by the playful composition of building facades. Exterior materials are layered to represent elements of Mexico’s ecology – the forest, sedimentary rock, and a vegetative roof.
The master plan introduces a performing arts center, classroom addition, and academic building to the existing physical education building and outdoor athletic fields. Careful consideration of the environmental design creates a semi-private green space within the campus. Stringent Chicago Public School standards for accessibility, IT, theater, and the outdoor campus are maintained throughout. |
