30 for 30: West Pullman School Senior Housing

By junio 6, 2024julio 7th, 2025No Comments

The West Pullman School served Chicago’s South Side for over a century. Though closed in 2013, its transformation into 60 affordable senior housing units ensures its continued community role. Preserving the exterior as a Chicago Landmark, the interiors showcase the building’s historical evolution during three previous rounds of construction and expansion (1894, 1900, and 1923). Distinctive architectural elements, such as varying doors, fixtures, and classroom features like chalkboards, are retained, reflecting its rich history and lending distinctive character to the new apartments and shared spaces. Completed in 2019, this new chapter for the West Pullman School has garnered three design awards for its innovative adaptive reuse. Thanks to our client West Pullman School Redevelopment Limited Partnership (Celadon Holdings & A Safe Haven Foundation), subconsultants Hey and Associates, C.E.
