Oakton College Library Learning Commons

Based on a design concept of introspection and the metaphor of a tree, UrbanWorks’ design for the Oakton Skokie Campus Library Learning Commons provides a contemporary take on the evolving delivery of college information services. The reception area provides the “roots,” introducing visitors to the “trunk” of the primary central circulation (including an elevator). Secondary paths connect the “branches” while individual offices, classrooms, and huddle spaces provide the “leaves.”

Spread over two floors, the library stacks, reference, and tutoring spaces are placed in a central open environment. More discrete private spaces, including a testing area, classrooms, offices, huddle areas, media room, and a lounge are arrayed around the perimeter of each level. Connection between levels is by a dedicated elevator within the Commons.
