Applauding the success of University of Illinois Architecture in Barcelona and Chicago (ABC) Studio! The UIUC ABC Studio is a seven-week class in which architecture students travel to Barcelona, Spain for two weeks, tour Chicago for one week, and then complete a four-week design studio at the Chicago Architecture Center. After an intensive comparative analysis of Barcelona’s Cerdà Plan and Chicago’s grid system, the class then applied urban planning principles and new living typologies to a site in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood. The resulting designs were reviewed by a jury of notable design professionals, and featured in an exhibit at the Chicago Architecture Center.
Both the 2023 and 2024 Chicago classes were led by UrbanWorks Principal and Professor Patricia Saldaña Natke. The Design Studio was facilitated by the UrbanWorks teaching team Maria Pellot, Ingedia Sanchez, and Sofia Linares.
