Oakton Des Plaines Campus Library Learning Commons
The renovation of Oakton Community College’s Des Plaines Campus Library Learning Commons reimagines the two-level interior based on the “living room effect” with a focus on comfort, functionality, and flow. The reimagined spaces support and encourage diverse learning styles and serve as a home away from home for students.
Open space fosters shared group learning while dedicated private areas support focused individual work. Comfortable new couches, armchairs, and a fireplace welcome users for more casual study and gatherings. Abundant natural light and wood ceiling baffles provide a welcoming and nurturing environment. A lively new palette of interior finishes renders simple materials—carpet, ceiling tile, and paint—as vital elements. The library’s rejuvenated spaces and amenities serve both the college and local community.
The Des Plaines Library Learning Commons is UrbanWorks’ second library project with Oakton Community College.
