Hancock School Featured at AIA Conference on Architecture

UrbanWorks’ new John Hancock College Prep High School was featured before an international audience at the recent American Institute of Architects (AIA) Conference on Architecture 2022 in Chicago. Marie Kohne, AIA; Maria Pellot, AIA; with Loren Johnson of Legat, led the tour of the new school in the city’s Clearing neighborhood near Midway Airport.

The new school’s memorable window and glazing patterns represent the low and high-frequency sound waves that reverberate throughout the community from planes overhead and student activity within the school. The design concept of “uplift” fosters student ambition and achievement based on this local context. The new 179,000-square-feet facility includes a black box theater, full-size auditorium, and two-position gymnasium that can be shared with the neighborhood to maintain a vibrant year-round community center.
